Clancy Works Dance Company

  • About the Artist:

    ClancyWorks shifts perceptions through dance! The Washington Post has described Dr. Adrienne Clancy, Founder, as “a wizard of invention” and her choreography as “a tour de force of unpredictable partnering.” Our work has been presented in Australia, Japan, Poland, Paraguay, Mexico, Israel, England, and 20 states. Dr. Clancy delivered the Keynote Speech for the ACAAC’s Arts Integration Conference in 2016.

    Our educational strength comes from Dr. Clancy’s vision to choreograph classes–using all elements that make a strong dance work to create class plans, heightening student and teacher engagement. We use the latest arts integration techniques to connect dance to academics. Co-teaching classes offers a model of a diverse team working together. Our students perform with company members, letting them see what a career in dance may look like. Dr. Clancy has been a member of the MD Artist Training Institute (MATI) and founded the Dance Education Training Institute (DETI), thriving since 2006.

      Description:

      ClancyWorks offers vibrant in-school dance residencies and after-school student-centered workshops as part of our arts education programming, teaching often under-represented dance genres: different forms of hip hop, jazz, and more, based upon the interests of our students.

      ClancyWorks residencies offer aspiring dance students the chance to work with professional dancers. The workshops provide expressive tools to question, collaborate, reflect, and gain deeper self-confidence while honing and enhancing the students’ dance techniques. Students have the opportunity to strengthen their artistic voices while learning about creative movement/improvisation techniques. The residencies encourage structured and supportive interactions with peers; provide practice in problem solving; and build academic and artistic skills, highlighting the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and positive group partnership.

      Key features of a ClancyWorks Residency:
      • Highlights life skills including the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and positive group interactions through dance within a nurturing environment balancing rigor, discipline and fun;
      • Creates learning opportunities through the creative process and performance alongside professional company dancers;
      • Encourages critical thinking through self-assessment and peer feedback;
      • Provides a unique opportunity for students to create relationships with working artists and gain insight into the world of professional dance;
      • Supports Maryland State Curriculum outcomes and objectives;
      • Provides students with a creative outlet to process changes to their lives and communities due to COVID-19.

      In addition, the residencies engage students in a positive and supportive learning environment that balances rigor and discipline with fun and community that helps to create the next generation of dance artists, as well as ensuring the next generation of dance enthusiasts and advocates. ClancyWorks has a long history of both lifting up and supplementing the work classroom teachers.

      Through dance, ClancyWorks offers an engaging way for participants to gain greater life skills, and reach the above listed goals. Dr. Clancy and her staff, as Artists in Residence, will help the students reach greater goals, achieve higher levels of learning across arts disciplines, and build a sense of community within the workshops and beyond, providing the students with instruction and choreographic assistance from dance professionals.
