Presented by Jo Fleming Contemporary Art
Dates: October 23, 2024 - November 30, 2024 at 12:00 pm to 5:00 pmThe tree inspired artwork by Four Maryland Artists:
Doug Moulden’s paintings are as much sculpture as they are flat-painted imagery. “I start off by constructing a form from plywood that I have warped and shaped. Using acrylic paints, with color and physical properties such as plasticity and volume to build up structure in space. I glue things and extrude paint onto the plywood. I use knives to apply modeling paste, building the surface through many layers until thick, rich and highly varied. Sometimes I carve into it. The end result is a heavy, rich surface that resembles vines, tree bark, woven fabric, rock or other surfaces.
Wood turnings by Allen Alexopulos: “My artistic goal is to draw as much of the natural figure, texture, and color out of the wood as is possible. Simple shapes combined with graceful curvatures amplify the beauty of my turnings.”
Sheryl Southwick’s paintings are dreamy forests filled with glints of light and shadow, enticing paths winding back under the trees, and color-drenched glades where every detail seems to be dancing.
Jo Fleming uses close-up observations and rubbings of the tree on architectural trace paper. I invite the subject to participate in the painting by incorporating its texture and surface. This means I paint large (sometimes life-size) and use collage elements in the mixed media.
