• About the Artist:

  Carien Quiroga was born in Pretoria, South Africa and relocated to the USA in 2002, working since then as both a multimedia artist and art educator. Her artistic work, whether in an educational environment, expressed through her own creative practices, or as part of public artworks, reflects her passion as an Artist-Educator and a strong belief in the power of art to transform lives. She teaches a variety of visual art and mosaic-making workshops for all ages and abilities in schools and with community organizations. As an Artist-in-Residence (Artivate: Project Youth ArtReach) she teaches at detention centers and correctional facilities, working with youthful offenders, women, and in the Crisis Intervention Unit. Ms. Quiroga is a Master Teacher, Instructional Coach, and Visual Art Lead Teacher for Maryland Centers for Creative Classrooms, a recipient of the Montgomery Co. Executive’s 2014 Outstanding Artist or Scholar Award, and a member of the AHCMC and MSAC Teaching Artist Rosters.

    Description:
    

    Join South-African born multimedia artist Carien Quiroga on a collaborative and empowering journey while learning about the Artist’s cultural heritage, artistic work, and the art of mosaic-making. The Artist will work with the school to design and plan the residency around a specific theme or concept and address any needs the school community may have. Mosaic artworks are suitable for indoor or outdoor installation and can include mosaic murals, stepping stones, or translucent glass mosaic art and may include traditional glass and ceramic mosaic, recycled materials, fused glass, or embossed metal. The collaborative process involves participants in all aspects of the project, from design to construction and presentation. Students learn and master mosaic techniques through a scaffolded process, practicing problem-solving, teamwork, and decision-making skills while leaving a visual legacy behind that both beautifies and educates the school community. During the 6-day residency, participants create individual mosaic elements that are incorporated into the collaborative artwork, allowing students to develop a sense of ownership, as well as an understanding of the collaborative art-making process. The structured residency is fully inclusive and adaptable to any grade or ability level, aiming for student success and empowerment.
