• About the Artist:

  Señor Ruben and Miss Debbie present multicultural folktales to preschool and school-age students in your classroom. These can be presented in Spanish and or English. A workshop can include puppet-making to encourage the children to continue telling stories at home. Please peruse our complete list of workshops that can be brought to your school. Chesapeake Children's Museum is also a great field trip destination! The museum is located in a five-acre woodland park in the center of Annapolis.

• • Bilingual Folk Tales

    Description:
    

    Audience members become characters as the story is told in English and Spanish. Simple costumes and props bring the story to life. The Lizard and the Sun is a traditional Mexican folk tale from long ago, reminding us to show appreciation. The Great Big Enormous Turnip, a folktale from eastern Europe with variations around the world, translates to a jicama, and the family members in our version wear sombreros and rebozos (colorful rectangular scarf).

    After the storytelling the students use various materials to craft their own puppets to take home.

    Description:
    

    Travel to the childhood home of Kunta Kinte through folktales, crafts, and music activities. Activities are tailored to the grade level.

  • Lead On, Harriet!

    Description:
    

    Meet a famous Maryland-born conductor from the Underground Railroad and take a "ride" with her to freedom. Activities include story cards which the students read aloud in sequence about Harriet Tubman and her role in US history. Learn about the hidden meaning in songs and other means of secrecy involved in this well-organized mission before emancipation. The program can include apple juice and cornbread along the escape route. This program is best experienced at the children's museum - in the evening, if possible!

    Program Costs:
    

    $150 per facilitator per hour for onsite workshops in Anne Arundel County.
    Field trips to CCM are $10-$12 per student. One adult free for every 5 students.
