  • About the Artist:

I am an illustrator, painter, and author. I grew up in France. I studied graphic and type design in Paris. I create original artworks for magazines, books, brands, private collectors, and myself. My first book as an author/illustrator, Les Reflets d’Hariett (Hariett’s Reflections), was published in France in September 2021, with the publishing house L’Agrume. It got very good reviews in the press, including in Le Monde and Telerama, and was shortlisted for a prize in the main children’s book festival in Paris (SLPJ). It was also awarded the Opera Prima prize at the Bologna Childrens Book Fair. The rights have already been sold in Korean, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian, Portuguese and Taiwanese.

    • Abstracting from real life : a transformation

      Description:

Abstraction is often a process, one that can take its roots in the artist’s world experience. There are many examples of abstract pieces with figurative titles that point at the transformation that occurred. There are many ways to go from the object to its abstract representation: for example, trying to express a movement, scaling up a detail, deconstructing, using geometric shapes, etc. In this workshop students explore how to go from real life to the abstract. In particular, focusing on technique is one way to move towards abstraction. (For instance, using a watery technique can literally dilute the outline of the object.) We will draw on the technique dictionary to explore abstraction as a process.

Project: students pick a theme (driving a car in the forest), an object (a leaf), or even themselves for a self-portrait, and they produce an abstracted version of their choice. Their work can include figurative elements or no figurative elements at all. The figuration can make an appearance in the title or not. Students are encouraged to use techniques from their dictionaries to develop the abstraction.

    • A cabinet of curiosity

      Description:

The students will make and assemble a collection of personal curiosities inspired by what they see in their everyday life, what they imagine or what they have studied in class . This workshop can be coupled with a visit to a museum (for example : a Natural History museum, an art museum, a marine museum…) where students can sketch and list objects they saw there. It can also be coupled with a theme (for example: the Jurassic era) or a science class. In this workshop I organise several activities using different materials and techniques that we eventually integrate into one or several cabinets. For example: making strange animals, making stones, filling glass jars, doing collage.

This workshop can be adapted for a different age group. For example with middle school students we would concentrate on invention of strange curiosities. With high school students we would draw more on history science and other course work.

      Appropriate Grade Levels:

    • Once upon a time

      Description:

In this class we explore visual ways to tell stories. For inspiration we will draw on traditional and contemporary illustrations including Chinese scrolls and comic strips. We will work on a variety of scales and different media : drawing, painting and collage. Students will learn about narration, making characters, settings, and the relationships between the text and the illustrations.

Depending on the length of the workshop the students will either illustrate a story I give them or write and illustrate a story. Exercises will include using collage to illustrate a scene, making a flip-book using post-its, and using a grid format to tell a story.

      Appropriate Grade Levels:
      3 - 5
