The third film, A Letter From Helga, is set in 1940s Iceland. It contrasts Iceland’s stark landscape with the inescapable complexity of human desire. There may be little to see on the region‘s cold surface, but a bubbling caldron of obsession, grief, longing, and despair lies underneath. Like the country’s foundational magma, these repressed emotions always threaten to erupt. And when these hidden passions emerge, they are revealed by a combination of silence, aching looks and touches, heated arguments, and violence. Two externally “perfect” couples in a small sheep farming community become entangled in rumors, questionable choices, and misbegotten love.
