Born in 1813 (the same year as Richard Wagner!), Giuseppe Verdi was the major Italian musical dramatist of the 19th century. La Traviata, his 1853 opera, enjoys well-deserved popularity as one of opera’s most performed works and has the distinction of being the most performed Verdi opera during his lifetime.
